Key parts of an office chair:
- Seat – The main surface you sit on. It should be wide enough and slightly padded. Some chairs let you adjust the depth so your thighs are supported without pressing into your knees.
- Backrest – Supports your spine. Many chairs have a curved shape to match the natural “S” curve of your back, especially the lower spine (lumbar area).
- Lumbar support – A built-in curve or adjustable pad that supports your lower back. This is important for avoiding slouching.
- Armrests – Support your arms and shoulders. Adjustable armrests can reduce strain in your neck and upper body.
- Base and wheels (casters) – Usually a 5-point base for stability, with wheels so you can move easily.
- Gas lift (height adjustment) – Lets you raise or lower the chair so your feet sit flat on the floor and your knees are at about a 90° angle.
